Hear Shining’s new album; watch the Crimson-jazz brutality of “21st Century Schizoid Man”

There are covers, and then there are covers. Shining’s version of King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man” is the latter, a roiling, screaming beast of wails, beats, and static.

Filmed in 2010 at Oslo, Norway’s Rockefeller Center, the 11-minute clip, featured on the band’s Live Blackjazz DVD, was uploaded in anticipation of the band performing there again today, Friday, April 26. According to saxophonist Jørgen Munkeby, “I feel this is the best version we have done of the song until now. But we’ll try to surpass it this Friday!”

Need even better news? Now you can stream the band’s brand-new album, One One One, right here.

Before or after you do that, check out the cover below and ask yourself why the hell you haven’t seen this band live yet. (Living outside of Norway is not an excuse.)
