Angus & Julia Stone: s/t
After a two-year hiatus, Australian brother-sister duo Angus & Julia Stone sync better than ever on their self-titled return. Their vocals are confident and collaborate more often than 2010’s Down the Way; they playfully trade lyrics in verses to highlight their interactions with romance and relationships, and their harmonies make the choruses sweet and memorable.
Honing on their individual talents, the two present their best leads on “Death-Defying Acts” (Julia) and “Little Whiskey” (Angus). And the album’s folk-rock instrumental force is dynamic, resembling the acoustic calmness of The Weepies and rockier strides of Brightblack Morning Light. Producer Rick Rubin assists in creating a bright and expansive scope and fresh sound that exceeds the typical simplicity of folk acts.
