Melvins: Tres Cabrones
On the umpteenth Melvins studio album, the seminal sludge institution hearkens back to its 1983 lineup by re-integrating founding drummer Mike Dillard. Dillard’s replacement, longtime mainstay Dale Crover, switches to bass in this lineup, one of three configurations currently active under the Melvins name (with a fourth possibly on the way!).
As usual, the familiar elements are all there: guitar tones modeled after Hotter Than Hell-era Kiss, sneering vocals, and that unmistakable trudging groove. But Crover, front-man Buzz Osborne, and their rotating cast of bandmates always manage to uncover new shades in their sound. Tres Cabrones proves (once again) that as this group sticks to its guns in middle age, its creative possibilities appear more limitless than ever.
