Oneohtrix Point Never: R Plus Seven
On his sixth solo full-length (and first for Warp), Oneohtrix Point Never (Daniel Lopatin) continues to move away from the elegiac analog synths and sci-fi styles that dominated his earlier work. Since his 2011 album (Replica) and his 2012 collaboration with Tim Hecker (Instrumental Tourist), Lopatin has expanded his palette into increasingly abstract dimensions.
R Plus Seven is almost entirely devoid of rhythmic grooves, and where Lopatin’s trademark synth atmospheres do appear, he reconstitutes them much like a cubist painter takes liberties with shapes. Animal sounds, smooth-jazz horns, and new-age textures all acquire unfamiliar, even alien characteristics within the settings that Lopatin makes for them. The result is a challenging, introspective work that, over time, slowly conditions the ear to meet the music on its own terms.
