Latterman: Turn Up the Punk, We Will Sing

Latterman - Turn Up the Punk, We Will SingThe best thing I can say about Latterman is that they sound like a watered-down punk version of Jawbreaker’s Unfun. This album was originally released in 2002, and since then has been out of print until the fellas decided to re-release it.

I guess the reasoning was to remember the scene as it was, not to depict what it had become, as the majority of the song are about their community at the time. Not to be rude, but who fucking cares? There are tens of thousands of bands in thousands of towns singing about how awesome and inclusive their scene is. People should grow up and not be interested in shitty punk rock. Scenes come and go, and that’s what makes them feel special at the time, like you belong to a club that only you and your buddies understand.

Back to the music: this is pretty much a Jawbreaker ripoff with some pop punk thrown in for good measure, lots of octave chords, popping bass melody lines, and throaty singing. Fist-pumping shout-alongs like, “If you stay young at heart, age can never win” from “Rebellion Vs. the Alarm Clock” should give you an idea of where these guys are coming from. Turn Up the Punk, We Will Sing isn’t a bad record by any means, but it does make me want to go listen to the real Unfun.
