The Away Team: National Anthem

The Away Team - National AnthemThe duo of rapper Sean Boog and producer Khrysis form Justus League offshoot The Away Team. Their first album, National Anthem, is a combination of consistent rhymes and better then stellar production.

It is rare in hip hop when the producer is the star of the group. Khrysis definitely deserves recognition for his variety and plethora of beats: from laidback beats with vocal samples to straightforward, harder sounding boom bap, Khrysis is on his way to making a name for himself.

In some reviews, rapper Sean Boog is criticized for sounding forgettable on the mic. With that in mind, I was expecting some Juelz Santana type of nonsense; however, I found a consistent emcee that fits and flows well with his partner in crime producer.

On “Always Be Around,” Sean Boog captivates the listener with a heartfelt, sincere tale about his father, or lack thereof. It’s moments like this when he shows the potential for his craft. The best song on the album is the Justus League posse cut, “On the Line” featuring Joe Scudda, Chaundon, and Phonte of Little Brother, who rip the track apart against a repetitive (but not annoying) vocal sample. Overall, this is album is pretty solid and The Away Team have the ability to have a bright future.
