Since 1998, the Jonas Kullhammar Quartet have quietly released five albums, received two Swedish Grammys, toured Europe, Canada, and the United States – without the help of major press coverage.
Their newest effort, Son of a Drummer, was recorded live in the studio using tenor sax, piano, double bass, and drums in a matter of only a few hours. The end result is four tracks of hard-bop jazz up in the ranks with Joe Henderson, Horace Silver, and Jackie McClean. They also add one cover song, “Corny Waltz,” written by fellow Swede Berndt Egerbladh in the 1960s.
Standout track “Hitman” finds the group at top form with plenty of time for solos from pianist Torbjörn Gulz and drummer Jonas Holgersson. This quartet is armed and dangerous and out to steal time on your stereos. Son of a Drummer is deserving of more attention.
