Memphis: A Little Place in the Wilderness

MemphisA Little Place in the Wilderness (Good Fences) is another addition for an era of soft-spoken, sad songwriter albums in the vein of Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab, and Bright Eyes.

Lead singer Torquil Campbell’s voice even sounds remarkably similar to Conor Oberst at times. Some portions of the disc are fun, especially the bouncy, clarinet-accompanied “Incredibly Drunk on Whiskey,” but others are mostly forgettable. In an age of sensitive songwriting, it’s crucial that the less musical, stripped-down songs have lyrical substance.

Unfortunately, most of Memphis’ work so far is filled with vague metaphors, clichéd imagery, and generally nap-inducing song structure. In Campbell’s case, it might be wise to stick to what he does the best – constructing smart, orchestral pop music and leaving the sad songs for somebody else.
