Southwestern indie folk champions DeVotchKa have signed over the European rights to their successful 2004 concept album, How It Ends, to Anti- Records.
The group recently experienced an upswing of popularity after lending its magical and additionally Gypsy touch to the surprise hit Little Miss Sunshine, which led to a 2006 nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack at the Academy Awards.
The four-piece outfit’s journey started long before that with its first release, SuperMelodrama, and a penchant for playing backup to burlesque shows. Since then, touring with the likes of Calexico, Belle and Sebastian, M. Ward, Gogol Bordello, and Marilyn Manson, as well as a breakout performance at the 2006 Bonnaroo Music Festival, has brought DeVotchKa to the forefront of the independent underground’s growing interest in music influenced by Eastern European folk.
Their fourth album, How It Ends, is an artful and, more often than not, transcendant concoction of folk music with roots not only in Eastern Europe but also Southwestern and South American sounds. According to vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Nick Urata, the album follows “the story of a young Ranchero who survives going to war, only to find his childhood sweetheart has married a rich man for the love of money…”
Anti- Europe will release an enhanced version of DeVotchKa‘s How It Ends on August 6, 2007, which will include an animated video for “Vengo,” a track from 2003 album Una Volta. In addition to that, the band will be perform a handful of shows in the U.S. and tour Europe at the end of the summer.
