Tom Waits (shown left), Philip Glass, Kronos Quartet, and more performed on the Dalai Lama’s U.S. tour in 2003 and will now have moments of the evening captured on compact disc.
On September 23, 2003, the Dalai Lama stopped at the Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall in New York for a benefit concert that was part of a twenty-day tour of the United States.
Now, Anti- Records will release a live album of the concert, which featured Tom Waits, Philip Glass, Kronos Quartet, Anoushka Shankar, Gyoto Tantric Choir, and Greg Cohen, on July 10.
The disc is a collaborative effort with Healing the Divide, a nonprofit organization that actor Richard Gere founded in 2001. It will be titled Healing the Divide: A Concert for Peace and Reconciliation and – along with Anti- and the artists involved – donate all proceeds to the group’s Tibetan Health Initiative, which provides health care to poverty-stricken Buddhist monks and nuns in refugee settlements.
Waits, who performed with Kronos Quartet and Cohen, has four tracks on the disc.
