Boston Hosts Opening of Scion Installation Art Tour 4

Jeff Soto Scion’s Installation Art Tour returns tonight for its fourth installment, opening in Boston at Rhys Gallery from 6-9 pm. Painter Jeff Soto (work shown left) is just among the diverse mix of forty contemporary artists within four different mediums — drawing, painting, collage, and photography — who interpreted this year’s theme, “It’s a Beautiful World.”

Also featured in the tour will be photography from Angela Boatwright, photo and special projects editor for Mass Appeal. Boatwright has freelanced for over thirteen years, and her work been featured in publications that include Vibe, Nylon, and W. Her photo of Aesop Rock graced the cover of ALARM 16.

Ron English appears alongside Soto on the roster of painters included in the tour. English, known internationally for his role in the culture-jamming movement, was the subject of Popaganda: The Art and Crimes of Ron English, the award-winning documentary by director and cinematographer Pedro Carvajal. Additionally, English‘s “subvertisements” appeared in Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me, and he was recently covered in the pages of ALARM.

The photography of respected graffiti artists and Space Monkey creator Dalek is also a part of Scion‘s photo exhibit. Though it isn’t his main medium, Dalek‘s photos are still full of personality, consisting largely of the urban landscapes he has come to know from his travels.

Innovative silk-screen artist R. Grimes will exhibit his collage work along with five other artists. R. Grimes first made his name in the D.I.Y. scene printing shirts and patches, but garnered international fame when he started printing live for audiences, creating an interactive silk-screening experience for all who were present.

The tour will visit nine cities, making a stop at Art Basel in Miami and ending in Los Angeles, where all the artwork will be auctioned. The catch? There isn’t one. 100% of the proceeds will go to art-related charities.
