Starting tomorrow, December 2, Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra will spend a week performing in Poland and Slovakia. The hard-bop cornetist/composer also has a new album to be released on Thrill Jockey on February 5.
The forthcoming album merges Exploding Star Orchestra pieces with the work of jazz musician Bill Dixon, who founded New York’s Jazz Composers Guild in 1964. Mazurek (shown above), a driving force behind the Chicago Underground Collective, is a frequent contributor to jazz scenes in Chicago and Brazil.
Thrill Jockey, one of many record labels to release Mazurek’s work, has a pair of 15th anniversary shows set for December 14 and 15 in Chicago.
