John Zorn Throws Benefit for Jewlia Eisenberg

Charming HostessThis Sunday, July 22, experimental jazz legend John Zorn will hold a benefit for vocalist Jewlia Eisenberg, the leader of musically and ethnically diverse act Charming Hostess (shown left), at his New York club, The Stone.

The evening’s performance, which features Zorn on sax, is to help offset the medical costs of the reported bike accident Eisenberg suffered in June.

Joining Zorn on stage will be Japanese electronic composer Ikue Mori as well as a host of talent in the form of cellist Okkyung Lee, vocalist/electronic artist Chuck Bettis, guitarist Charlie Looker, harpist Shelley Burgon, bassist Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz, drummer Mike Pride, and other special guests. The two-set event begins at 8 and 10 pm ET, has a suggested donation of $20, and will be curated by guitarist/composer extraordinaire Trey Spruance of Secret Chiefs 3.

Spruance and Bettis have spent all of July curating The Stone, and each has taken part in a number of the month’s performances. Most recently, Spruance performed compositions from Zorn‘s Book of Angels series with spectacular Indian/surf/Spaghetti Western outfit Secret Chiefs 3, which was featured in ALARM’s summer issue. The exceptionally talented mini-ensemble also helped record material for the Masada portion of Book of Angels.

As for Eisenberg, the wide-ranging vocalist will be on stage with Charming Hostess at The Stone on July 28.
