Magnetic Fields, The Mountain Goats, Cursive Celebrate Noise Pop’s Sweet 16

magneticfields2.jpgCelebrating independent art, music, film, and culture, the Noise Pop Festival will reach its sixteenth birthday in February 2008. Musical performers Magnetic Fields, The Mountain Goats, Cursive, and The Gutter Twins (Afghan Whigs’ Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan) have all been confirmed for the event.

Noise Pop will be held in San Francisco over six nights, starting February 26 and continuing until March 2.

The idea for Noise Pop came from a San Francisco music lover named Kevin Arnold in 1993. That year, Arnold’s creation only took place for one night at a dingy club with five of the Bay Area’s finest underground rock bands, which included local groups the Meices and the Fastbacks.

Following that night, Noise Pop progressively grew into the substantial music festival it is today with more and more established bands participating each year, such as Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, The White Stripes, The Flaming Lips, Grandaddy, and Death Cab For Cutie.

Noise Pop has remained true to Arnold’s original vision of showcasing live music while adding art galleries, music film festivals, educational group discussions with musicians and professionals in the music industry, and indie designer merchandise sales.

Stephen Merritt’s Magnetic Fields are headlining two shows at the Herbst Theatre to promote their anticipated new album, Distortions. The Mountain Goats have also been confirmed to perform more than once, with a total of three shows at three different venues.

Nationally acclaimed bands will share the stage with San Franciscan artists throughout the entire festival. More information about the latest artist confirmations and other events will be available in early December when the festival launches its 2008 website.
