Halfway through writing his new record, Matthew Houck, the mastermind behind the indie folk project Phosphorescent, left his hometown of Athens, Georgia to see what New York had to offer. As it turns out, the move offered the musician isolation, and Pride, out October 23 on Dead Oceans, is the first Phosphorescent album with Houck on every instrument.
The new full-length disc is being billed as a scaled-back, focused effort; the guest musicians are gone except for a stopgap choir. “A Picture of Torn-Up Praise,” Pride‘s haunting opener that can be heard below, offers a plaintive melody with copious vocal overdubs and sparse, acoustic instrumentation.
Pride, Phosphorescent’s debut on Dead Oceans, will be released in the midst of Houck’s month-long US tour.
