Documentary filmmaker Robert Greenwald will act as keynote speaker this Friday, November 16 at the inaugural Alt-Film Festival. The event serves as an introduction to independent filmmaking and how to operate outside of the Hollywood structure.
Greenwald, a controversial but respected figure now seen on MSNBC programs, has directed or produced a slew of political and social documentaries during the last five years. Among his acclaimed recent films are Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers (2006), Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price (2005), and Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism (2004).
The festival opener, starting at 7:30 PM PT, will be held at the Westwood Blvd. Borders Books in Los Angeles, California. A number of other rousing filmmakers will join Greenwald, including director James Spooner (Afro-Punk, an examination of race in the punk scene), director Esther Bell (Exist, starring Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio), director/alt-porn star Joanna Angel (The Sick & Twisted Horror of Joanna Angel), director Matt Pizzolo (Threat), and director Curt Johnson (Your Mommy Kills Animals).
The Alt-Film Festival plans to expand nationwide this winter, bringing how-to panels to other Borders locations and arranging weekend-long midnight movie screenings. Attendance at Friday’s event is free.
