Stephen Colbert, the Johnathan Swift of cable programming and host of Comedy Central’s Colbert Report, has decided to grace the literary world with his modern-day satire. Winner of three Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Bill O’Reilly-esque news broadcasts, Colbert has authored I Am America (And So Can You!), allowing his particular brand of caricature to access yet another venue utilized by personality-driven politics.
Some may remember Colbert’s turn as a hilariously strict but uninformed history teacher in Strangers With Candy, but his rise to fame began on The Daily Show, where he continued to develop a character whose main idiosyncrasy was an upsetting lack of knowledge matched only by his unwillingness to acknowledge such a deficit. Almost ten years later, Colbert has an extensive, devoted fan base known as The Colbert Nation, not to mention four Emmy nominations for his Daily Show spin-off, now in its third season.
I Am America (And So Can You!), out October 9, promises 240 pages of unbridled mock-punditry covering Colbert’s favorite topics: race, religion, sex, sports, and the American family. Also included will be a complete transcript of the comedian’s brazen speech from the 2006 White House Correspondents’ Dinner (see below) as well as a holiday DVD.
