But the group — comprised of producer/guitarist Joel Hamilton (Battle of Mice), drummer Matthias Bossi (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), bassist Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu), and violinist Carla Kihlstedt (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, 2 Foot Yard) — intends to change all that studio-only nonsense this Friday, July 13. It is then that the four will present their first (and possibly only) live performance at The Gramercy Theater in New York City with special guests Jon Langford (The Mekons) and Carla Bozulich (Geraldine Fibbers), both of whom appear on The Book of Knots’ second album, Traineater (Anti-).
Friday’s exclusive set will also feature appearances from Aaron Lazar (The Giraffes) and Shahzad Ismaily (Secret Chiefs 3, Marc Ribot, 2 Foot Yard). Kihlstedt and Ismaily should be well practiced; the two performed last night in New York with Marika Hughes as 2 Foot Yard.
“Soundcheck” airs today on WNYC (93.9 FM) and includes The Book of Knots‘ discussion about collaborations with respective folk and punk legends Tom Waits and Mike Watt.
