I was baffled by the electronic/analog on-again-off-again drumbeats. After the first listen, I didn’t know quite what was going on, except to say that I was pretty confused. And yet, after a couple thoughtful listens, I think I’m starting to get it. Even though the effects (especially on the vocals) seem a bit much at times, they’re used appropriately, and add more than they detract.
Even without the pitch shifters and the delay and the massive, massive amounts of reverb, these songs would stand up. They would still be well worth a listen. The well-thought-out lyrics augment the crazily conceived cacophonies of chords and choruses.
Fans of quality songwriting and quality sound manipulation rejoice! Your album has arrived.
