Why? Prep New EP, Album, and $1 Concert in NYC

why2.jpgYour buck will go a long way at New York City’s Knitting Factory this Sunday, October 14, as indie hip hop rockers Why? take the stage for the mere cover of one dollar. And even if NYC isn’t on your weekend’s itinerary, the assuredly melodic sounds of Why? will return with The Hollows EP via Anticon Records on November 19.

Though the works of Why?, led by prominent, quirky vocalist Yoni Wolf, have seen a notable variance in sound throughout the years, the members are finding comfort in the their own shimmering style.

Wolf, who initially gained notoriety as a member of cLOUDDEAD with fellow Anticon collaborators Adam “Doseone” Drucker and Odd Nosdam, transformed Why? from a solo project into a band in 2005. The resultant Sanddollars EP and Elephant Eyelash full-length still centered on Wolf’s eccentric vocals, but contained a melodic backdrop courtesy of the new lineup.

In true Wolf style, the title track of The Hollows EP features guest collaborations with Andrew Broder and Mark Erickson of Fog, Doseone, and Nedelle Torrisi of The Curtains and Cryptacize. Included as B-sides on the US release are a remix by Dntel and covers by Xiu Xiu and Half-Handed Cloud; the European edition contains covers by Islands and Dump as well as a remix by Boards of Canada.

The forthcoming Why? album, Alopecia, will be released through Anticon in March of 2008. To guarantee a place at Knitting Factory on Sunday, prospective attendees are asked to RSVP to whyrsvp@gmail.com. The show starts at 10 pm.
