Documentary of The Gits Debuts This July

Marking the 15th memorial anniversary of the death of lead singer Mia Zapata, the documentary film The Gits – about the tragic fall of the influential Seattle-based band and search for Zapata’s killer – opens in select theatres across North America in July. Directed by Kerry O’Kane, the film is also slated for a DVD release on July 8th from Liberation Entertainment via Adrenaline/ADA distribution.

With a sound that blended hardcore punk with the blues, The Gits were poised for greater success in the vein of peers such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam. However, on July 7, 1993, lead singer Mia Zapata was murdered in an apparent rape/homicide.

When the film began shooting, the murder was an unsolved case. However, with fans, friends, and celebrities such as Joan Jett and Nirvana raising money, Zapata’s killer was eventually convicted through Seattle’s first case solved by DNA samples.
