The results are in… and Nine Inch Nails are the winners in a landslide victory over the conventional methods of distribution. Not that it’s a competition. Totaling somewhere near 800,000 transactions, the band has grossed roughly $1,619,420 for the sale of their latest release, Ghosts I-IV. The 36-track instrumental “opus” (as some publications are touting it) was released on March 2, made available through the bands website NiN.com.
Trent Reznor, the man behind the band, posted his thanks on the NiN website today.
First of all, a sincere THANK YOU for the response to Ghosts. We are all amazed at the reaction for what we assumed would be a quiet curiosity in the NIN catalog. My faith in all of you has been restored – let’s all go have coffee somewhere (my treat)!
Also announced were plans to introduce the Ghosts project to a film medium. Fan submissions will be collected and hosted on YouTube. An online “film festival” of sorts, Reznor explains. “It’s meant to be an experiment in collaboration and a chance for us to interact beyond the typical one-way artist-to-fan relationship.”
