Korean artist JooYoun Paek – known for such projects as Zipper Orchestra and Pillowig – has done something pretty incredible in her new project, Fold Loud. In it, she has combined music and origami together, harboring a very original idea. By folding different flaps of paper and touching them together, one can make electrical contacts, creating and controlling music.
Paek‘s website explains it best: “Each fold is assigned to a different human vocal sound so that combinations of folds create harmonies. Users can fold multiple Fold Loud sheets together to produce a chorus of voices. Opened circuits made out of conductive fabric are visibly stitched onto the sheets of paper which creates a meta-technological aesthetic. When the sheets are folded along crease lines, a circuit is closed like a switch.”
Sound confusing? Don’t worry – just scroll to the bottom of her website and watch the video demonstration.
