Twin Tigers: Curious Faces/Violet Future

Twin Tigers have been around less than a year, yet they are the latest hot band from the Athens, GA scene. The group is made of scattered remnants of past acts, most notably Psychic Hearts. With Twin Tigers, songwriter Matthew Rain has adopted more traditional roots on which to base his frenetic and fuzzed sound. Following Rain’s previous, abrasive sounds, his newest effort is much less shocking to the ear. The self-released, six-song EP Curious Faces/Violet Future moves from piece to piece like a single thread. The two titles could exemplify a split in mood, but the songs are consistent and flow together effortlessly. Sometimes the transitions are lost and a whole new song replaces the one before it. “Red Fox Run” opens with a fast hook and Rain’s fragile wail until a blast from underground shakes the train off the tracks and chaos ensues through songs “Watershed” and “Fantastic Plastic.” The radio-bound “Golden Daze” rolls the drums and infuses electronics with a thumping rhythm. Closer “Invisible Zombies” may be the highlight, with Rain sounding like David Bowie fronting The Jesus and Mary Chain. The track is the most drugged and experimental sound Twin Tigers achieve, and the moaning chorus behind it gives off a chill. Their statement of purpose in the title holds true. Twin Tigers have created enough curiosity to ensure a colorful future ahead.
