What We’re Doing This Weekend: Friday

Looking for some high-brow entertainment and low-brow debauchery this Friday? For the former, we recommend seeing the Lyric Opera of Chicago performing George Gershwin‘s classic opera Porgy and Bess. And if that scene is a bit too stuffy for your tastes, then maybe you’d enjoy the booze-praising Celtic punk of The Tossers.

Lyric Opera of Chicago performing Porgy and Bess @ Civic Opera House

Eliciting one of its biggest demands for tickets in its 54-year history, the Lyric Opera of Chicago is performing the initially dismissed and later largely acclaimed opera Porgy and Bess by compositional legend George Gershwin. Tickets go as high as $197, but if you don’t mind the cheap seats, then spending $32 isn’t shabby for such a production. The performance runs five times between the 12th and the 19th.

The Tossers @ Double Door

There isn’t a new formula on The Tossers’ latest release, On a Fine Spring Evening, but it doesn’t particularly matter. The group’s Celtic folk/punk is perfect for massive sing-alongs and throwing back a few, both of which will likely be in full effect at the Double Door.
