Join Chicago animator and illustrator Lilli Carré on January 15 at Quimby’s bookstore for a signing of her new graphic novel The Lagoon (Fantagraphics). Carré will also be selling prints and various little handmade book items. The event starts at 7 PM and refreshments will be served.
The Lagoon tells the story of the effects that a lagoon creature’s siren song has on one family. Every night after sundown, its call can be heard, provoking each family member and eventually leading them into danger.
Carré depicts this tale with black and white nib-pen and brush-stroke illustrations. Though she was influenced by Creature from the Black Lagoon and Night of the Hunter while writing and illustrating this piece, her use of rhythm and punctuated silences make this more of a sound-driven gothic narrative, reminiscent of Flannery O’Conner and Carson McCullers.
Carré’s animated films have shown in festivals around the world, including the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Her previous book of comics Tales of Woodsman Pete (Top Shelf) is a collection of her stories surrounding a hermit who’s slowly losing his wits.
