Guitarist/composer Omar Rodriguez Lopez, mastermind of The Mars Volta, has tabbed drummer Zach Hill and synth bassist Jonathan Hischke of Hella as well as bassist Juan Alderete de la Peña of The Mars Volta to form a “new” group — aptly named El Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez Lopez.
The group actually isn’t new; its members united in 2006 to record a trio of albums. The first of those, Cryptomnesia I, will be released May 5 on Omar’s newly launched Omar Rodriguez Lopez Productions. Mars Volta singer Cedric Bixler Zavala provides vocals on eight of the album’s 11 tracks.
Omar will continue with The Mars Volta as his top priority. Watch a short video promo for the album below; it sounds pretty wild.
