New Music Seminar in Chicago October 6

If you play in a band, or are interested in learning about the “new” music industry, this seminar could be for you.

The New Music Seminar comes to the Park West in Chicago on October 6th. After a 15-year hiatus, the long-running New York based seminar has been revamped to provide comprehensive knowledge on today’s ever-changing music industry.

Founder Tom Silverman asks, “What’s going to happen to the old music business?  It’s going to be pretty much over by 2013. Record sales are dropping by 15-20% a year, and they are continuing to decline. What will be the business that will replace it?”

New technologies have given way to a flood of new releases on the market, which has made it increasingly difficult for individual bands and artists to stand out.

The day-long event features keynote speaker, Yahoo! Music’s Michael Spiegelman and panel discussions with some of today’s industry players, from label owners, website developers, music journalist, and talent bookers.

The seminar focuses on how independent musicians can successfully navigate the music industry under today’s terms, with topics ranging from new business practices, marketing and promotions, and the live show.

It’s a matter of learning to navigate the music industry under new terms. “We’re not going to complain about the record business, fuck that, it’s done,” says Silverman. “At the end of the day [of the seminar] people will be inspired with new tools and new connections, dos and don’ts by some of the great minds in the business.”

The Chicago date is the first of several New Music Seminars around the country, including a stop in Los Angeles in February, 2010, and Atlanta in April, 2010.
