Preview: Pitchfork Music Festival 2009

Chicago’s Union Park is set to get its fork on during this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival. This year’s headliners include the likes of The National, MF DOOM, Grizzly Bear, Fucked Up, and Beirut, taking place from Friday July 17th to Sunday July 19th.

Friday night’s star-studded lineup is sure to bring back plenty of mid-90s memories with performances by Tortoise, Yo La Tengo, Built to Spill, and clinically insane sonic destroyers The Jesus Lizard. With any luck the sound system will be able to handle the thrashing it’s bound to receive during the Jesus Lizard’s set (unlike last year when Boris blew out their PA).

So bring beach towels, sunscreen, bug spray, and an open mind to a fest that will be full of everything a music fan could ask for.

Artists To Watch For

Lindstrøm (Saturday 6:30): Norwegian house-king bringing the party to Chicago.

Yeasayer (Saturday 5:15): Bombastic and hyper-talented musicians with a penchant for deep grooves.

Fucked Up (Saturday 2:30): The most raucous band at this year’s fest. A can’t miss for anyone without preexisting heart conditions.

The Mae Shi (Sunday 1:00): The only band that can be likened to cotton candy and sandpaper in the same breath.

DJ/Rupture (Sunday 4:30) : Breakout dubstep sensation with all the necessary ingredients to create a stellar show.

M83 (Sunday 6:15): Electronica masterminds that blend new wave reverb with thick, gained-up synths.

The Very Best (Sunday 8:30): International hip-hoppers/feel-good specialists.

The Flaming Lips (Sunday 8:40): Space explorers/pink robot battlers/prize racers extraordinaire.
