Saturday brings the electric edition of bassist Tatsu Aoki‘s compelling mixture of American jazz with Japanese taiko drumming. It also brings another post-reunion show from punk standouts Hot Water Music and Naked Raygun.Tatsu Aoki’s Miyumi Project, “Electric Edition” @ Velvet Lounge
Inventive Japanese bassist/composer Tatsu Aoki returns to the Velvet Lounge, the frequent home of his critically acclaimed Miyumi Project. The cross-ethnic performance mixes American jazz with Japanese taiko drumming, uniting East and West in a compelling fusion of bouncy bass, wild woodwinds, thunderous beats, and funky improvisation.
For this gig, the project is again presented as an electric edition, featuring the boundless talents of guest guitarist Jeff Parker (Tortoise, A Cushicle).
Naked Raygun, Hot Water Music @ House of Blues
Gravelly voiced Gainseville rockers Hot Water Music play the second of back-to-back shows at Chicago’s House of Blues as local pop-punk icons Naked Raygun headline.
Raygun’s power-pop creations can be heard live again thanks to a 2006 reunion, which brought the band back together “for good.” Hot Water Music is also active again following a 2008 reunion, which coincided with the release of a B-sides/rarities album on No Idea.
