Dubbed “The Chairman” in Nigeria, King Sunny Ade holds a distinct place in the dance-tastic Afro-pop scene. After a ten-year absence, the artist’s bright, rhythmic juju music has returned to the studio with Baba Mo Tunde (IndigeDisc), to be released on September 28.
Featured on the new album are full-length rearrangements of Ade’s past work, as well as reinterpretations of classic juju songs. Improvisation proves a key component of the album, while it offers funk influences and poetry-inspired lyrics.
Along with Ade’s youthful band counterparts, an entourage of American musicians makes an appearance on Baba Mo Tunde; Joe Doria, Wayne Horvitz, and DJ King Britt lend their talents to update, mix with, and enhance Ade’s melodies to get you bouncing.
