What better way to get a sense of how the band arrived at its signature sound than to examine the music that inspired it? We asked Jeremy Greenspan to put together a 10-track playlist of his favorite songs. He did us one better, coming through with 11 songs ranging from soulful to skittering and timeless to Top 40.

It’s super exciting to be buying so many R&S records again.
2. Untold: “Mass Dreams of the Future”
See what I mean about all these R&S records?
3. Jacques Greene: “Another Girl”
Good Canadian music — like a new Bachmann Turner Overdrive.
4. Kelly Rowland: “Motivation”
That bass line is my motivation.
5. Pal Joey: “Party Time”
I totally worshipped old Pal Joey this year. A true innovator.
6. 10cc: “Worst Band in the World”
From Sheet Music, which was maybe my most listened-to older album of the past year (or two).
7. Cass McCombs: “County Line”
I was given this record at the Domino office and was totally floored by this song. Incredible.
8. Todd Terje: “Ragysh”
Matt played this at a DJ gig the other night; I lost my mind.
9. Redbone: “Come and Get Your Love”
What can I say? This song is great.
10. Imagination: “Just an Illusion”
This was another big one for me this year. The whole Imagination album (In the Heat of the Night). Both Matt and I have a thing for older UK R&B.
11. Miguel: “Sure Thing”
This was probably my fave track of the year. It has it all.
