Prior to Tangerine Dream’s forthcoming US tour kicking off in July, Brooklyn’s BAMcinématek is presenting a 10-film series highlighting the influential German group’s most memorable movie moments. Producing music for more than 40 years, Tangerine Dream amassed more than 30 film scores to its credit in addition to its many studio albums. Along the way, the group has inspired countless electronic acts and brought the group — and the movies — a massive following.
From June 1st to 7th, the special event (titled Tangerine Dreams) will screen 10 films that bear the band’s unearthly style of music, starting with the 1988 film Miracle Mile, a story about star-crossed lovers who fall for one another before finding out nuclear war will erupt within the hour. The series concludes on the 7th with 1972 sci-fi thriller Silent Running, a film that inspired Tangerine Dream ex-member Klaus Schulze, as well as a screening of the short that inspired the movie, Rolf Forberg’s Ark (1970).
Other films — all being screened on original 35 mm — include Thief, The Keep, Near Dark, and more. As an added bonus for film buffs, Philippe Garrel’s rare masterpiece Le berceau de cristal will be shown for the first time ever in North America, featuring music by Klaus Schulze’s space-rock band Ash Ra Tempel.
Editor’s note: Silent Running was formerly implied to have been scored by Tangerine Dream. It actually was scored by Peter Schickele.
