Santogold: s/t

Along with the steady chorus of Internet hype accompanying her debut release, Santogold (a.k.a. Santi White) has had the spectre of M.I.A following her since the first few tracks of her album started to make the rounds late last year.

The comparisons were impossible to sidestep, and courted to a certain extent; the two musicians are friends/touring mates and share collaborators in producers Diplo and Switch. Early press coverage appeared to waste no time in playing up the association.

Rival Schools Reunite, Plan New Album, Announce Tour Dates

When Rival Schools released their first record, United by Fate, in 2001 there were a lot of moans and groans from the poorly-aging hardcore scene. They were billed a hardcore supergroup, founded by members of Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits, Youth Of Today, and CIV, all who were presumed out to make a easy buck from relentlessly devoted European hardcore fans. To make matters worse, the record came out on major record label, Island (a division of Universal Music Group, the largest record label on earth). Regardless of how the band was viewed by the indie masses, they received wide recongition and moderate success until they broke up in 2002. It has been rumored that the group has been working on a follow up album to United by Fate. Last month, Germans website RockSound.tv announced the band will be recording, neogitating with Island Records, and touring Europe this year. Tour dates below.

The term “renaissance man” is tailor made for an artist like Eyvind Kang. He’s a prolific composer, multi-instrumentalist, and frequent guest star, lending his unique contemporary-classical style to collaborations with indie rock stalwarts Blonde Redhead and experimental icons Sun City Girls among dozens others. It’s on solo efforts like The Yelm Sessions, released in November on Tzadik, where his vision and talent can truly be appreciated.

Saviours: Heavy Metal’s Salvation

While metal has finally reached the mainstream, Oakland’s Saviours do their best to drive it back underground. Recorded entirely on tape, its second record Into Abbadon recalls a time when metal was genuinely feared.
