Another year, another torrential downpour of albums across our desks. As always, we encountered way too much amazing music, from Meshuggah to The Mars Volta, Converge, Killer Mike, P.O.S, and many more.
In just one more trip around the sun, another swarm of immensely talented but under-recognized musicians has harnessed its collective talents and discharged its creations into the void. This list is but one fraction of those dedicated individuals who caught our ears with some serious jams.
Raised on an island with a penchant for all things sci-fi, Conrad Keely, frontman for post-punk band And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, believes in a great — perhaps dark — destiny for the universe. Such spiritual beliefs and philosophical ruminations heavily inform the band’s ambitious, intricate songwriting.
How far can you stretch the weekend? We’ll try for five nights while watching the Watchmen, Irepress, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Dex Romweber Duo, The Lonesome Organist, and W.W. Lowman.
Our plans this weekend include local shows with the massive stoner metal of The Sword, the experimental jazz of the Umbrella Music Festival, and the raw alt-country of O’death.
And our friends in Austin have another great festival of their own, as the Fun Fun Fun Fest run on Saturday and Sunday.
With their raw energy and simple melodies, Explosions in the Sky brings us tantalizing live shows.
