Formed in the early ’90s in Champaign, Illinois, emo-rock band Braid has been mostly out of commission for the past decade. Save a brief reunion tour in the summer of 2004, the band has been split up, with each member doing his own thing. Last year, Bob Nanna and Chris Broach were performing DJ sets together at Bar Deville in Chicago and decided to once again reunite the band. A new EP, Closer to Closed, was released on August 16 via Polyvinyl. Contributing photographer Elizabeth Gilmore was on hand for Braid’s first show in roughly seven years.

After a multi-year hiatus, DC-based post-punk band The Dismemberment Plan reunited and returned to the limelight last fall, playing shows in support of Barsuk‘s Emergency & I (DeSoto, 1999) reissue. One recent stop brought the Gladys Knight-loving band to Metro in Chicago, and contributing photographer Lucy Hewett captured these images of the, dare we say, elder statesmen of indie rock.

Seminal British post-punk band Gang of Four is currently in the midst of a worldwide tour, and it stopped in Chicago recently to play music from its most recent release, Content. Though now playing without original bassist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham, the Gang is still ripping through its classics with new members Thomas McNeice and Mark Heaney, respectively. Photographer Tracy Graham captured these shots of the band, rocking as if no time had passed at all since its last album of new material, Shrinkwrapped, in 1995.

Gary, Indiana’s gangster-rap phenom Freddie Gibbs, Canadian indie rapper Shad, and Chicago-based ALARM favorite Rita J joined forces for a recent show at Metro in Chicago. The trio of hip-hop performances was part of the annual Tomorrow Never Knows festival hosted by Schubas, Lincoln Hall, and, as of this year, Metro. Concert Photos: Four Tet & Matthew Dear @ Metro
Four Tet, Matthew Dear, and Jon Hopkins played to a packed house recently at the Metro in Chicago. Dear and his band warmed up the crowd with a thumping set of avant-electro jams before Kieran Hebden, a.k.a. Four Tet, took the stage with nothing more than a table full of laptops and gadgets. Hebden never spoke a word, simply nodding a “hello” before launching into an hour-and-a-half DJ set.
