Francis discussed the shift in style from beat oriented to folk rock, using live instruments with big-name collaborators (members from Grandaddy, Death Cab for Cutie, DeVotchKa, Sparklehorse, and more). Prefix Magazine has premiered “The Best of Times,” a single from rapper/poet Sage Francis‘ forthcoming album, Li(f)e. The track, whose lyrical content is a revealing and personal reflection, is built on a neoclassical composition by Yann Tiersen, best known for his work on the Amelie soundtrack.

Sage Francis‘ new album features Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine), Jim Becker and Tim Rutili (Califone), and songwriting by Jason Lytle (Grandaddy), Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie), Tim Fite, and members of Calexico, DeVotchKa, and Sparklehorse.
“We specifically sought out songwriters who had never worked with a rapper,” Francis explains.

During the early days of this year’s Republican National Convention, hundreds of people were arrested with what the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) dubbed “a crackdown on free speech.” Jared Paul, a journalist and friend of indie rapper Sage Francis, was one of the arrested. In response, Francis has released a free song to solicit donations and help with Paul’s legal fees.
