LA-based producer Baths, a.k.a. Will Wiesenfeld, released his debut album, Cerulean, last year on Anticon, and has been touring tirelessly ever since. His setup is simple, and his crew minimal: a laptop, an MPC, and himself. He doesn’t need much to make the magic happen; mountains of synth, heavy hip-hop beats, and fragile falsetto comprise his sound.

On paper, it sounds like what every other “producer” with a decent home-recording system is making. However, rather than merely aiming to impress with flashy tricks, Baths manages to make it sound fresh with palpable sincerity. Contributing photographer Drew Reynolds snapped these shots at a recent stop at Subterranean in Chicago.

Murder by Death

Concert Photos: Murder by Death @ Subterranean (Chicago, IL)

Indiana-based alt-rock quartet Murder by Death is currently touring the US with Fake Problems and Buried Beds. During the month of February, the band was joined by The Builders & The Butchers and Damion Suomi & The Minor Prophets. And on April 4 of last year, Murder by Death released its fifth full-length album, Good Morning, Magpie, on Vagrant Records.

In a recent tour stop at the packed Subterranean in Chicago, cellist Sarah Balliet, clad in genre-appropriate Western wear, infused the band’s freewheeling rock with a shot of electro-country, while vocalist Adam Turla sang songs about zombies, whiskey, and the devil. Photographer Wallo Villacorta was on the scene to capture the action.

Dub Trio Plays Intimate and Engaging Set

At the November 21st Dub Trio show, the crowd was thin, possibly because the band had already played Chicago several times this year. Although the initial hype may have settled, those in attendance actively anticipated the band’s third Subterranean appearance in 2008.
