As we make our rounds this weekend, we plan to catch soulful folk crooner William Elliot Whitmore, multi-genre rapper Serengeti, rock/jazz/electronic quintet Zing!, and a local festival (Chicago Soundmap 2009) that asks selected composers to balance improvisation and composition.
Zing!
What We’re Seeing Saturday: The Quin Kirchner Group
Featuring members of NOMO, Silences (Sumire), Zing! and Eastern Blok, this newly formed improvisational outfit features four young standouts in Chicago’s jazz, rock, and electronic scenes, relying less on freeform contrast and more on repeated melodies and apparent sections.
Q&A: Jazz/Rock Guitarist Dave Miller on the Connotations of Experimentation
With more musical projects than fingers, Chicago guitarist Dave Miller has his hands fully immersed in jazz, rock, psychedelic, noise, and experimental forms.
What We’re Doing This Weekend: Friday
After a few days celebrating 2009 with iPod mixes and the Hum reunion shows, a few of us will head out to another awesome local show, this one featuring the eccentric electro-rock of Volcano!, the no-nonsense horn-tinged rock of Cougars, and the avant-garde fusion of math rock and free jazz of Zing!.
