After Gogol Bordello’s 2007 release of internationally acclaimed SUPER TARANTA!, the gypsy punk pioneers gained the favor of underground and mainstream pop culture alike faster than anyone could have predicted. Returning to North America for “Forces of Victory 2008,” their exultant month-long tour in early spring, the band will also hit up Coachella at the end of April for the second year in a row.
Gogol Bordello and Eugene Hutz, their capricious front man, have been confounding and captivating western audiences since 1999. Devotees include none other than Madonna, who cast Hutz as the lead role in her directorial debut, Filth & Wisdom, which premieres February 13th at the Berlin Film Festival and is said to be inspired by Hutz himself. Gracing the film’s soundtrack are a number of original songs from Gogol Bordello, as the band appears in the film as well.
Hutz and his “flamboyant, Gypsy style” are also cited as the inspiration for Gucci’s Fall Menswear collection.
The “Force of Victory 2008” tour kicks off March 1st in Philadelphia, with nary a pause until the end of the month. Coachella tickets are now officially on sale, and though it’s only been five days, single passes are already sold out, leaving only the three-day tickets for $269 a pop.
